AAEEBL and MERLOT are partnering to expand the successful use of eportfolios and will be building a collection of resources to help educators around the world advance authentic, experiential and evidenced-based learning. EPAC continues to be part of the eportfolio MERLOT community and is already working with AAEEBL.
The goals of our eportfolio portal are to provide educators and learners from around the world with:
- Open access to online resources that can help them design, develop, and sustain the effective use of eportfolios.
- Open services to contribute resources into the MERLOT eportfolio collections so others can easily discover quality information and advice about eportfolios.
- Open services for people to comment on, advise about, and organize online resources about eportfolios.
- Connections to organizations that are advancing the use of eportfolios for authentic, experiential and evidenced-based learning.
Established in 2009, the Association for Authentic, Experiential and
Evidence-Based Learning (AAEEBL, pronounced "able") is a membership
organization for the world eportfolio community that now has
established affiliations and collaborations with nearly all worldwide
eportfolio initiatives, projects and organizations. Members and corporate affiliates address educational transformation by focusing on new
dynamics for teaching and learning, on increasing connections among the
eportfolio community, and on moving toward a more authentic assessment of
actual student achievement and progress based on evidence of learning
over time. AAEEBL endeavors include:
- Supporting ongoing research, implementation and dissemination through The Connect to Learning FIPSE-funded initiative that is focused on eportfolio pedagogy and expanding use of reflection in eportfolio practices.
- Holding an annual world eportfolio summit and supporting several regional eportfolio conferences.
- Publishing The AAEEBL Learner, a bi-monthly newsletter that is published at Virginia Tech University.

- A simple and clear definition of electronic portfolios (usually called eportfolios and sometimes referred to as webfolios or digital portfolios) is impossible because electronic portfolios be utilized in multiple ways and for varied reasons by students, faculty, staff and administrators. Educators readily proclaim the potential of eportfolios to enhance teaching and learning; assessment practices; institutional and program accreditation processes; faculty tenure and promotion decisions; administrative procedures and strategies; student, faculty, and alumni career-advancement; and more.
- About EPAC -- Previously sponsored by the National Learning Infrastructure Initiative/Educause Learning Initiative and the American Association for Higher Education, the EPAC Community of Practice has been a leading resource on electronic portfolios since October 2002.
